Cape Argus Cycle TourCycling Comes of Age in South Africa

The events history dates back to 1977 when recreational cycling hardly existed in South Africa. Two Cape business people, Bill Mylrea and John Stegmann, had a dream to promote cycling as a sport in the country. They organised the "Big Ride-In" where a few hundred cyclists, headed by mayor John Tyers, rode up Adderley and Darling Streets as a publicity stunt.

The Biggest Cycling Event in the Southern Hemisphere

From those humble beginnings, the ACT has grown into a major international event, billed as "the biggest cycling event in the southern hemisphere". Last year, the organisers set the cut-off at 25 000 but a flood of entries forced them to up the limit to 27 200. Still, 1 600 disappointed cyclists were left without a race number. And consider this for growth. Twelve years ago, 1 440 litres of Coke was enough to refresh all participants and officials. Nowadays, over 10 000 litres and 27 000 cans are needed to do the trick.

Cape Argus Cycle TourThe Race Weekend

The week leading up to the cycle tour is a particularly busy one for the Mother City with visitors from all over South Africa and abroad descending on the city for registration, the Life Cycle Expo and the host of other activities that surround the lead up to the race. On race day there are various road closures in and around the city ... the best advice is to be aware, be patient and enjoy the festivities.

The race is a real family outing, so pick a spot along the route and cheer on your friends and family, and then meet up with them at the finishing line for more fun, food and entertainment.

  • Start: Hertzog Boulevard, Cape Town
  • Finish: Western Boulevard, Green Point, Cape Town
  • Registration: takes place at the Life Cycle Expo at the Good Hope Centre.
